21 The creative use of content is part of the core idea of open content. If the licensee edits CC-licensed content from third parties, in addition to the protection of the licensed work, a separate editor's copyright may arise (for editing, see section 1.a above). In order for the edited work to retain its open content status, licensing of the modified material is required. The licence used for this purpose is referred to by the CCPL as a modification licence. The term plays a role in licence compatibility under the SA – Share Alike condition (see section 3, margin numbers 175, 189) and in the licence offer to subsequent recipients (sections 2.a.5.A and 2.a.5.B).
22 The licence variants with a prohibition on modification (ND) do not contain the term, as modification may not be passed on and, consequently, the licensing of a modification is also not permitted.
